Though perhaps not as recognizable as the RCA 44, the legendary RCA KU3A was a rare gem from the late 40’s, originally designed specifically for Hollywood movies studios. Since ribbon microphones inherently have a figure-8 polar pattern, this model was designed with a folded pipe with internal damping providing an acoustic delay for sound going to the back side of the ribbon. Essentially this created a cardioid pickup pattern by mechanical means. While a unidirectional microphone obviously had its advantages on film sets, the KU3A is also highly revered to this day for its unique tone. The ribbon is a bit shorter that that found in a 44, and this allows for less of a proximity effect, and a sweet top end.
The AEA KU4 is modern recreation of the KU3A, engineered from the ground up in order to recreate this seminal design while ensuring flawless consistency from unit to unit. The medium sized ribbon creates unique presence, which can be extremely flattering on vocals and acoustic guitar. As the only cardioid ribbon microphone in current production, there is nothing else quite like it!
